About this trip

Join Sheila Ewers for an unforgettable trip into the heart of Africa on the doorstep of Chobe National Park in Botswana.

This Circle of Life Yoga Retreat celebrates the interconnectedness of all living things, inspired by the natural cycles of birth, growth and transformation. Set in a serene safari location, the retreat offers a holistic blend of yoga, meditation, and nature to guide you on a personal jouney of renewal and balance.

Our journey will begin and end at Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, where you will meet your hosts and facilitators, stay in a lodge near the Falls, and visit the Victoria Falls Rainforest before being transfered via boat cruise and game drive to our private Glamping Lodge the following day.

Each day will include yoga, breathwork, meditation and activiites to deepen our circle of connection, and throughout the week, we will experience game drives,  cultural immersion, (including cultural workshops such as Basket Weaving Demonstrations, Music/Drumming, Bush Fauna, Survival and Medicine Talks, Cooking Classes, or Dance Workshops). a traditional Boma dinner and dancing, and much more.

What You Should Know:

Participants will need to book their own tranportation to and from Victoria Falls, unless you have opted for the Cape Town Pre-Retreat add on.

If you are not participating in the Cape Town Pre-Retreat Add-on, the simplest way to arrive from the US is to fly into Johannasburg, South Africa and take a domestic flight from there. Many flights are availalbe daily, and the journey from Johannasburg to Victoria Falls takes less than 2 hours. As we grow closer to the date, we would like to coordinate our arrival to Victoria Falls Airport, so it will be best if we are all on the same flight. I will send recommended flight information 6 month prior to the retreat.

The location of this retreat is remote, and the accommodations are simple but elegant in glamping tents. We will be staying outside of the National Park, so there is little to no risk of dangerous predators on the property.

We highly recommend travel insurance to cover any unexpected event or need for evacuation. Our preferred supplier for this is Faye

LOGISTICS:

  • Flights:

    • From US to South Africa (Non-stop flights are approximately 15 -16 hours)

      • Nonstop flights are offered from the US to Johannesburg, SA by the following airlines:

        • South African Airways: Flies nonstop from New York City (JFK) and Washington, D.C. (IAD).

        • Delta Air Lines: Offers a nonstop route from Atlanta (ATL).

        • United Airlines: Provides a nonstop service from Newark (EWR) to Johannesburg.

        • Nonstop flights from the United States to Cape Town, South Africa are offered by the following airlines:

  • Nonstop flight are offered from the US to Cape Town, SA by the following airlines:

    • United Airlines: United operates direct flights from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) to Cape Town International Airport (CPT).

    • Delta Airlines: Delta also offers non-stop service to Cape Town, with direct flights available from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL).

  • Multicity International trips are also possible arriving in Cape Town, for example, and departing from Johannesburg.

  • Flights from SA to Victoria Falls Zimbabwe:

    • Airlink offers direct flights from Cape Town to Victoria Falls for approximately $500 round trip - Flights from Cape Town are approximately 3 hours. If you choose the Cape Town pre-retreat add-on, I will manage this booking for you.

    • Multiple Airlines offer direct flights from Johannesburg to Victoria Falls starting around $282 Round Trip - Flights from Johannesburg are approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes.

  • Accommodations:

    • Recommendation: Choose the  CAPE TOWN add on to arrive at least two days prior to retreat start: This will include 2 nights in a 5 star hotel and gives you time to acclimate and enjoy another beautiful location. It will be winter in Cape Town, so it is not necessarily ideal for enjoying the beaches for which it is renowned, but it’s a good time to hike, explore the city or visit a vineyard.

    • After the retreat and/or mobile safari plan your international departure from Johannesburg. This will simplify the end of your journey since you can fly from either Victoria Falls (post safari) or Kasane (post extension) back to Johannesburg more easily than Cape Town.

      • I will arrange a City Tour in Cape Town for those interested

      • I can also arrange an optional winery visit. for those who come earlier than the add-on start.

    • Alternative: Johannesburg Johannesburg is a rich and vibrant city, but not as genteel as Cape Town and there isn't much to see.. Highlights here are the Apartheid Museum and Nelson Mandela House, and the atmosphere is urban and gritty.

      • The hotels I recommend here are more expensive - in the $400+ per night range - to ensure optimal location. The Westcliff is an excellent choice, and I can book it for you with some travel perks is you choose.

  • Visas, Passports, etc. You will visit three separate countries during this trip and must meet the requirements for each.

    • South Africa: Please review the information provided by the US state department. No Visa is required for South Africa, but you should have at least two consecutive blank pages available in your passport, and your passport should not expire within 6 months of entry.

    • Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe: Please review the information provided by the US State Department. The same passport requirements as listed for South Africa will apply. In addition, you will purchase a double entry visa on arrival when you land at the airport in Zimbabwe. The price is $70 USD and should be paid in cash.

    • Botswana: Please review the information provided by the US State Department. No Visa is required, and passport must be valid for at least 6 months.

  • Vaccinations: No vaccines are required, although some travel clinics recommend the yellow fever vaccine for travel to all of these countries. It is always a good idea to be up to date on all of your routine vaccinations, especially when traveling to foreign countries.

  • Malaria Prevention: Malaria is present in some parts of Botswana, including areas near Chobe National Park, however mosquitoes are less frequent during the dry season. If you’re worried, here’s how to stay healthy:

    • Prophylactic Medication: Consult your doctor about anti-malarial medication. Start taking it before your trip and continue as advised.

    • Insect Repellent with DEET.

  • Availability of Medical Care in the event of emergency: The nearby village has basic medical care available, and a hospital is available in Kasane, approximately one hour away.

  • Trip Insurance: YES!!! You should absolutely purchase trip insurance if you have not already done so. This covers interruption, medical transport, etc., and when visiting remote areas such as the one where we will be, it is essential. You can get a quote and purchase HERE.

Day 1 image

Arrival Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

Upon arrival at Victoria Falls Airport, your tranfer will bring you to our partner hotel to meet the group and settle in. We'll gather for a delicious lunch, a meet and greet activity and some time to get to know each other. Then we will make our way to Victoria Falls Rainforest to view this astonishing natural wonder. The day will end with a group dinner before you tuck in for a restful night full of dreams of the coming adventure.

Day 2

Day 2 image

Boat Cruise and Game Drive

After an invigorating yoga practice, we will begin our journey to Botswana. Along the way, we will jump right into our safari adventure with a Boat Cruise and Game Drive through the Chobe National Forest. Potential exists to see all 5 of the big game right here on your first day. Keep your eyes open for leopards, rhinos, elephants, lions, buffalo, giraffes and other wild friends before you even arrive at our destination!

Day 3

Day 3 image

Walking Safari and Sundowner

We'll start our day with yoga and spend most of our time relaxing on the property, journaling, and connecting our circle more deeply through the stillness of the African Savannah. When evening arrives, we'll venture out for a walking safari and watch the breathtaking sunset together before returning to the lodge for dinner. Before bed, we'll gather once more for meditation under the stars.

Day 4

Day 4 image

Game Drive

A full day in the park! We will leave before sunrise today and set out on a lengthier game drive. As we dive a bit deeper into the park and explore its diverse ecosystem, you will be sure to meet more and more varieties of animals. Chobe is famous for its elephants and is home to an extimated 50,000 of them, so it is highly likely that we will see them along the way. You may also spot antelope species like impalas, kudus and sables, or elegant giraffes grazing on tall trees. When we return to the lodge, we can share our wonder at our group dinner.

Day 5

Day 5 image

Mokoro

Today starts as usual with a mindful movement practice in the morning and a leisurely early afternoon before our highlight: a Mokoro safari on traditional canoes. Thousands of years ago, the Bushmen used dug-out canoes to effortlessly move around the Okavango Delta. Today, eco-friendly versions are used for game viewing safaris and the mokoro has become the iconic symbol of the Delta. Gliding over mirror-like bodies of water in one of the most idyllic spots in the world is an experience that is quite unrivalled. From this vantage point, the size and scale of all you see seems even more special.

-note that this is dependent upon seasonal rains and floodwaters. If we are unable to do this activity, a similar one will replace it.

Day 6

Day 6 image

Integration, Connection, Final Game Drive

After yoga and lunch, we will have one more chance to search for animals in a late afternoon game drive.

Day 7

Day 7 image

Cultural Connection

After an inspired movement class, and delicious breakfast, we will make our way into the local village to learn more about the area and culture in which we are immersed. Situated on the former tribal land of the Basubiya people,  Munga Plains honors their cultural heritage by hiring local staff, supporting artisans, and collaborating on community projects. As guests, we get to experience local traditions and lifestyles, ensuring that our visit positively impacts the community. In the afternoon, we'll gather for basket weaving, dance and joyful celebration.

Day 8
